Dr. Halter's laboratory studies neuroendocrine regulation of metabolism in aging and in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Projects address potential mechanisms that contribute to hyperglycemia observed in elderly people and in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. These studies involve defining quantitative aspects of pancreatic beta cell function and insulin action in young controls and elderly patients with normal glucose metabolism, impaired carbohydrate tolerance, or overt type 2 diabetes. Related studies are investigating pancreatic islet adaptation to insulin resistance in human aging and hypertension by studying pancreatic beta cell function in relationship to measurement of insulin resistance.

Collaborators include Mark Supiano, Andrzej Galecki, Marla Smith, Cathy Lee, and Anne Chang.
